Job Summary

The Counselor/Intern position in the Student Counseling Center is responsible for providing mental health counseling, crisis management, consultation, and outreach services to the A1 Business and Technical College community.

Supervisory Responsibilities

None.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Providing mental health counseling and psychotherapy services to students;
  • Providing crisis management and consultation services to the entire campus community;
  • Providing psycho-educational outreach programming to the campus community;
  • Evening and weekend responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Student Counseling. 

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Knowledge and good judgment in the application of complex principles of human behavior and student development theories;
  • Ability to develop and maintain a strong therapeutic alliance with clients;
  • Ability to provide clinical assessments of danger to self and others and make treatment decisions on the basis of such assessments;
  • Ability to seek appropriate clinical supervision and consultation;
  • Good oral, nonverbal, written, and listening communication skills;
  • Ability to understand and apply ethical and legal considerations relevant to mental health work;
  • An understanding of the use of technology to enhance outreach services within the mental health fields ethical guidelines. 

Education, Certificates, Licenses, & Experience

  • Master’s degree in an applied mental health program that leads to state licensure is required;
  • Experience in university-based counseling centers strongly preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift and carry equipment or supplies weighing up to 40 pounds;
  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time;
  • Adequate hearing to communicate effectively in person or by phone.
